After the abrupt break up between power couple Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, the thought of another celebrity couple throwing in the towel doesn’t seem to be a stretch. Even though celebrity break-ups are nothing new, for some reason everyone was shocked when news began circulating about Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith‘s alleged divorce.

Yesterday morning InTouch Weekly reported that Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith were separating after 13 years of marriage. After much speculation, rumor and Internet innuendo, everyone was wondering how true the information could be. Apparently not too true because later the couple in question decided to issue a statement to Access Hollywood stating:

“Although we are reluctant to respond to these types of press reports, the rumors circulating about our relationship are completely false. We are still together, and our marriage is intact.”

The two have done many interviews promoting their love for one another and frequently shares inside peeks into their relationship, which has us thinking these two lovers separating is nearly close to impossible. The couple has also gone on the record about how having an “open relationship” should be inevitable for partners to make it. But why do we give them so much power or regard them as a stalwart symbol of love?

Beyoncé and Jay Z. David and Victoria ‘Posh’ Beckham. Barack and Michelle Obama. And the Spice Girls … They are all a part of thoughts to what a perfect functioning relationship looks like. To some people, any given couple from the aforementioned list is the epitome couple. If this sounds bizarre, it’s not.

For those who pretend not to care, celebrity love stories offer us the hope for a happy ending that sometimes can be blurred when it comes to grim and hustle of everyday life. The notion of seeing a couple working together is very necessary to see. We need these positive images. This idea gives us a chance to internalize the love seen especially if we have never experienced true love in our own life.

The good guy always gets his girl. Or the wife always stands by her husband. Wouldn’t that be interesting if that worked out in real life? The hopeless romantic woman meets her prince charming she’s dedicatedly waited on. How sweet. I know life isn’t a fairy tale but sometimes it’s okay to fantasize. Maybe if life were filled of optimism and hope, more relationships would actually last.

However, if Will and Jada decided to call it quits, would we lose all hope for romance in our personal lives? Hopefully not.
