Howard was shot by officers in 2005 during a traffic stop, in which officers say he was going down a one way street. Officers claim that when they tried to arrest Howard he began to fire his weapon. However, according to the Chicago Sun Times, Howard told officers he was an off-duty cop and was shot afterwards.

After the shooting, Howard was charged with four counts of attempted murder; three counts of aggravated battery and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm at a police officer. The attempted murder charges were deadlocked however, and introduced the charges again, in which Howard was found guilty of attempted murder.

Many of Morgan’s supporters are upset with the verdict, calling it double jeopardy.

Morgan’s wife spoke to reporters about the unfairness of the verdict saying:

“It’s just wrong. They want to sweep this under the carpet and don’t want to take the blame. All of the young people who were victims of police shootings are dead. They can’t tell their side of the story. Mr. Morgan was shot 28 times — 21 in the back of his body and seven times in the front. The man deserves to be treated fairly.”

Morgan faces sentencing on April 5th in which he may serve up to 80 years in prison.

Community leaders such as Jesse Jackson have gotten involved, but their progress has been slowed due to the fact the community hasn’t expressed outrage of their own.
