Miriam Carey capitol hill suspect

New details in the shooting death of Miriam Carey, the woman who led police on a car chase from the White House to the Capitol before being fatally shot, suggest a motive for her behavior. Police officers were summoned to Carey’s Connecticut home at least twice prior to her death, and her boyfriend was growing concerned about her mental stability, according to audio recordings released Thursday. In one of the incidents, Carey told police she believed Barack Obama “put her residence under electronic surveillance and that it was being fed live to all the national news outlets,” according to a police report. Days after the Nevada Sparks Middle School shooting, the gunman has been identified as 12-year-old Jose Reyes. Reyes opened fire with a 9-millimeter Ruger semiautomatic pistol, shooting three people before turning the gun on himself; Michael Landsberry, a teacher at the school, was also killed. Students reportedly identified Jose Reyes as the shooter to newspapers early on in the week, but the boy’s name was not released until officials had confirmation. [DailyMail]

A Virginia woman was arrested last week after firing warning shots into the air in an effort to scare away a group of boys who were assaulting her daughter. Lakisha Gaither and her 15-year-old were visiting the home of a girl who had arrived at Gaither’s house early that day with a group of teen boys. Concerned for her daughter’s safety, Lakisha hoped to speak to the girl’s mother and defuse the situation. Upon arriving at the apartment complex, the two were again confronted by the group of boys. The situation turned violent when one of the males punched Gaither’s daughter, breaking her glasses. Lakisha says the punches kept flying and that’s why she fired the warning shots. Police arrived on the scene shortly thereafter, arresting Lakisha for reckless handling of a firearm. [Gawker]

Former NSA Director Michael Hayden is not pleased to have discovered some of his private conversations with reporters were live tweeted for all the world to see. Progressive activist Tom Matzzie was sitting near Hayden on a train Thursday, when he decided to send out tweets describing Hayden’s conversation. Matzzie said Hayden was “blabbing on background as a former senior admin official.'” Tom told HuffPost he couldn’t believe what he was hearing, but Hayden “just kept saying stuff.” Hayden claims Matzzie’s recollection of the conversation was incorrect, but Tom’s stickin’ by his tweets! Residents are up in arms after news broke that a 20-year-old waiter at a local Carrabba’s Italian Grill was denied a tip because of his sexual orientation. The young man provided a couple with exemplary service, but they pair claimed they could not in “good conscience” tip the young man because his “homosexual lifestyle is an affront to GOD.” The couple left a profanity-laden note on the check explaining their decision not to leave a tip. Locals have since rushed to the restaurant to offer kind words and tip the waiter extra. [WALBNews]
