This weekend, two big movies come out: the Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels-led Dumb and Dumber To, and Beyond the Lights.
On Rotten Tomatoes, a site that accumulates ratings from the United States’ best critics, Dumb and Dumber To has a 31 percent fresh rating (meaning good). Beyond the Lights has a 85 percent fresh rating. In short, watch Beyond the Lights.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Noni Jean, an up-and-coming pop star who falls in love with Naz (played by Nate Parker) a police officer who saves her life. Being with Naz makes Noni question the fast paced life of a pop star.
The movie, written by Gina Prince-Bythewood (from Love and Basketball fame) is one of the better black-led romance movies we’ve seen in some time.
It’s been out for a day, and we can already say it will be a cult classic. (In the way that most black movies are.)
