A four-year-old was subjected to embarrassment when a teacher allegedly told his mother the student was “evil” and “sinister” for being left-handed.
Alisha Sands said her son Zayde just started pre-school at Oakes Elementary in Okemah, OK when the incident occurred. Sands noticed her son was writing with his right hand, even though he is left-handed. When she asked him why, Zayde said he was told his left hand was “bad,” KFOR reports.
Sands sent the teacher a note, explaining both she and Zayde are left-handed. The teacher, who hasn’t been identified, responded with an article about the ancient taboos affecting left-handed people. The article explains how 15th century critics would align left-handedness to an association with Satan.
It was an article calling left-handedness, “unlucky,” “evil,” and “sinister.” “It breaks my heart for him because someone actually believes that, believes my child is evil because he’s left handed, it’s crazy,” she said. “There was no suspension of any kind. There was basically nothing done to this teacher. She told them she thought I needed literature on it.”
Sands plans to file a formal complaint with the Oklahoma Board of Education.
“I don’t feel like the school did what they were supposed to for him,” Sands said.
The principal of Oakes Elementary told reporters an investigation would be launched regarding the teacher’s behavior.
For now, Zayde will more than likely transfer to another class.
